Toddler dies in drowning at rural Victorian property

A toddler has died after being pulled unresponsive from a dam on a rural property in Victoria’s north on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to the property in Whroo, about 25 kilometres north-east of Nagambie, just after 10am.

Paramedics at the scene applied CPR but the child could not be saved.

“Sadly, the infant was unable to be revived and died at the scene,” a police spokeswoman said.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

According to Life Saving Victoria, 37 people died in drowning incidents between July 1 last year and March 16.

Twenty-two people died from drowning this summer, a slight increase on the five-year average.

In findings released in November last year, Victorian coroner Sarah Gebert found children aged one and two were the most vulnerable to drowning, as they become more mobile, curious and unpredictable.

Almost 50 young children drowned in Victoria between January 2010 and March last year.
