A man has been found dead near a primary school on Melbourne’s outer-western fringe.

Emergency services were called to a park off Elementary Road in Mambourin – a new estate almost halfway between central Melbourne and Geelong – about 7.30am on Tuesday.

In a statement released just before midday, police said homicide detectives were investigating.

“A man, who is believed to be known to the victim, is currently in custody assisting police with enquiries,” the statement said.

“The exact circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be determined.”

Photos from the crime scene showed orange tarps and police tape around a playground just north of Laa Yulta Primary School, which opened last year.
