Major flood warning for Lismore, northern NSW as Alfred heads inland

Heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts are possible over parts of the Northern Rivers, Northern Tablelands and Mid North Coast on Sunday, with potential rainfall of 50 and 100m in six hours and as much as 100 millimetres to 150 millimetres over 24 hours.
The forecast possible deluge is predicted to ease on Sunday night, heading into Monday morning.
In Queensland, severe weather warnings also remained in place for large parts of the south-east corner of the state, where 320,000 residents were without power, almost a third of that number on the Gold Coast.
In Brisbane, two people were injured, one of them hospitalised, as a result of falling trees in strong winds.
The NSW State Emergency Service said on Sunday morning it had received more than 10,390 calls and responded to more than 5982 incidents as Alfred made its way inland.
Communities should remain vigilant despite the cyclone having been downgraded to a low before it crossed the coastline, it warned.
“As of 5am Sunday 9 March, approximately 14,600 people are currently under emergency warnings across the state,” the SES said.

“Approximately 31,200 dwellings are subject to warnings as a result of flooding, including watch and act and emergency warnings.
“People should have a portable radio and are encouraged to listen to their emergency broadcaster for the latest information and updates.”
The SES said on Sunday it had performed 29 flood rescues while it had attended to 915 flood-related incidents in the previous 24 hours.
Flood warnings in NSW were active as far south as Gloucester, west of Forster, and as far into the state as Coonamble, north of Dubbo.
More than 300 schools in northern NSW are scheduled to remain closed on Monday.
