Firefighters have made progress in the fight against the Palisades and Eaton fires ahead of predicted “critical” bushfire weather returning.

So far, firefighters have contained 33 per cent of the Eaton Fire and 14 per cent of the Palisades Fire over the weekend, but the looming return of the powerful Santa Ana winds threatens to undo their progress.

A “Red Flag Warning” issued by the National Weather Service warned of a “particularly dangerous situation” from Tuesday morning onwards (Wednesday morning AEDT).

When the winds hit, Los Angeles is predicted to experience “a high risk for large fires with very rapid fire spread, extreme fire behaviour and long-range spotting”.

“The anticipated winds combined with low humidity … will keep fire threat in all of Los Angeles County critical,” LA County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said.

This weather event is not predicted to be as strong as last week’s “windstorm”.
