Alex de Minaur’s next opponent has more on his mind than a potential third-round berth at the Australian Open.

American qualifier Tristan Boyer, a former top-10 junior who beat Federico Coria of Argentina in five sets on Tuesday for his first grand slam match win, hails from Altadena, California, the town at the epicentre of the Los Angeles wildfires.

Boyer, 23, is in Melbourne with his mother Shari and grandfather, but his father Chris remains in California and had to evacuate their home. Some of Boyer’s other family and friends have been left homeless.

“It’s something that I can’t really do anything about right now, but I mean, obviously, when I come off the court, and after I’ve done all the prep and everything – yeah, it’s crazy what’s happening,” Boyer said.

“It’s really, really devastating to see. I just want to give people good news. We have friends there, and they’re following me, so I just want to do the best I can for them, and hopefully, it gets resolved quickly.”

Eighth-seeded de Minaur was unaware of Boyer’s family situation after he ousted Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets on Tuesday night.

“Obviously, it’s a horrible situation right now in California. All my condolences go to those affected in that area,” de Minaur said.
